Otolith characterization and integrative species identification of adult mesopelagic fishes from the western North Atlantic Ocean

چکیده

Fish diversity and ecology in the ocean’s mesopelagic zone are understudied compared to other marine regions despite growing interest harvesting these potential resources. Otoliths can provide a wealth of taxonomic life history information about fish, which help fill knowledge gaps; however, there has been relatively little research date on otoliths species. Here, species-specific image library was assembled sagittal from 70 fishes belonging 29 families collected western North Atlantic Ocean. Images adult 12 species were documented photographed for first time. The fish identified with combination morphological characters DNA barcoding. Regressions between otolith size length presented six largest sample sizes this study. This library, coupled otolith-length width fish-length relationships, be used prey identification back-calculation size, making it valuable tool studies relating food webs important yet poorly understood zone. In addition, 44 barcodes generated study highlight benefit using an integrative approach nature, as well add existing public databases that enable cryptic metabarcoding analyses

Comparative metabolic rates of common western North Atlantic Ocean sciaenid fishes.

The resting metabolic rates (R(R)) of western North Atlantic Ocean sciaenids, such as Atlantic croaker Micropogonias undulatus, spot Leiostomus xanthurus and kingfishes Menticirrhus spp., as well as the active metabolic rates (R(A)) of M. undulatus and L. xanthurus were investigated to facilitate inter and intraspecific comparisons of their energetic ecology. The R(R) of M. undulatus and L. xan...

Phosphate depletion in the western North Atlantic Ocean.

Surface waters of the subtropical Sargasso Sea contain dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) concentrations of 0.2 to 1.0 nanomolar, which are sufficiently low to result in phosphorus control of primary production. The DIP concentrations in this area (which receives high inputs of iron-rich dust from arid regions of North Africa) are one to two orders of magnitude lower than surface levels in the...

Mode-1 internal tides in the western North Atlantic Ocean

Mode-1 internal tides were observed the western North Atlantic using an ocean acoustic tomography array deployed in 1991–1992 centered on 251N, 661W. The pentagonal array, 700-km across, acted as an antenna for mode-1 internal-tides. Coherent internal-tide waves with O(1m) displacements were observed traveling in several directions. Although the internal tides of the region were relatively quie...

Barcoding Atlantic Canada’s mesopelagic and upper bathypelagic marine fishes

DNA barcode sequences were developed from 557 mesopelagic and upper bathypelagic teleost specimens collected in waters off Atlantic Canada. Confident morphological identifications were available for 366 specimens, of 118 species and 93 genera, which yielded 328 haplotypes. Five of the species were novel to the Barcode of Life Database (BOLD). Most of the 118 species conformed to expectations of...
